The NATO intervention in Lybia

The NATO intervention in Lybia

The Resolution N°.1973, which was passed by the Security Council, imposed an air ban or a no-fly on Libya and empowered the NATO alliance to intervene militarily in the Libyan issue on the pretext of protecting civilians. Since the outbreak of the revolution, which overthrew the regime of the departed leader - Kadhafi regime - the country has been unhappy, dissatisfied and disappointed at the NATO that has not lived up to its promise to achieve the sought after future. Thanks to oil revenues, the Libyan people have dreamed about a new nation where wealth is equally distributed so that they can live in blessing. Their dream, however, has evaporated into thin air. Just one year after the revolution, the Libyan people began to complain about insecurity, unemployment, unclean streets and the goods whose prices have gone up. It is true that the war has overthrown the Kadhafi regime, but riots have broken out now and then in several areas and upheaval is going further. In fact, weapons, which are spread at random, do pose a threat to the whole country and its neighbors. Some of the people, who have taken part in the revolution, have refused to submit and hand their weapons over to the central government. Some of them have broken into governmental institutions in Tripoli and in many other cities protesting against the central government that has not met their demands. Many areas are smuggling weapons across the Libyan borders. The Algerian army has already declared the confiscation of a large number of weapons coming from Libya. The country in the region as well as the international community fear that such weapons may fall into terrorists and rebels` hands which could result in the deterioration of the delicate security condition in Libya's neighbors. In short, there is a long path for Libya to get back security and stability. I believe that the rationale behind the NATO intervention both in Syria and Libya is to protect its interests. They often claim that they intervene in order to fight terrorism, spread peace and security and promote democracy. I think it is hard for the NATO to claim that it has achieved all the targets of this intervention notably the protection of civilians. The NATO is responsible for the damage inflicted upon the Libyan people. It has become evident that coming to the negotiating table is the only way-out to settle the international conflicts. In this regard, foreign intervention in the internal affairs of any country will neither resolve crises nor clear up ambiguities. It will just add fuel to the flames.
